Business owners optimistic as shown by Q4 indices

CHINESE business climate index continued to rise in the fourth quarter of last year, while the country's business owners appeared more confident, indicating a solid base for further economic expansion.

China's Business Climate Index edged up 0.1 point from a quarter earlier to 138 in the October-December period, the National Bureau of Statistics said today.

China's Entrepreneur Confidence Index also added to 137, 1.1 points more than that in the previous quarter.

A reading above 100 indicates an expansion, and a reading above 130 signals an active area.

"Despite uncertainties ahead as China tightens its monetary policy and restructures its economy, entrepreneurs tend to be optimistic," said Li Maoyu, an analyst at the Changjiang Securities Co.

China officially announced to shift to a prudent monetary policy stance in December to tame runaway inflation and growing asset bubbles. The country also listed revamping of its economic structure as a top priority in the 12th Five-Year Plan starting from this year.
