Canada to seek investors from China

CANADA will host an "Invest in Canada" week at the Shanghai World Expo in October as it seeks to boost Chinese investment in the country's prominent industries, Trade Minister Peter Van Loan announced yesterday in Shanghai.

Each day of the week will be focused on a key sector in which Canada has experience and expertise - mining and resources, automotive, life sciences, clean technologies and digital media.

"I invite all of you to visit the Canada Pavilion in October to join us as we celebrate Canadian excellence in all of these areas," Loan said at a conference yesterday to encourage more Chinese investors to head to Canada.

"The Economist Intelligence Unit tells us that Canada will remain the 'best place to do business' in the Group 7 over the next five years," Loan said.

"Indeed, Canada has led the G7 growth for much of the past decade. We also enjoy the G7's lowest debt-to-GDP ratio," he said.

To make it easier to access the Canadian market, the country is investing in an Asia Pacific Gateway initiative - the system of modern ports, railways and roads that provides Chinese investors and those across Asia rapid, efficient and reliable connection to and from North American markets.
