China Wealth Index climbs to highest in 2 years
CHINESE households are enthusiastic about investing in stocks whose surprisingly good performance helped bolster people’s confidence about the future, a survey showed yesterday.
The China Wealth Index, compiled every two months by the Bank of Communications and Nielsen to gauge sentiment among Chinese households, stood at 133 in May — the highest in two years.
The index stood at 128 in March and 132 in January. A reading above 100 reflects optimism.
The index on people’s willingness to invest saw the fastest growth of 7 points to 120.
“The dazzling stock market rally in the past two months has made people enthusiastic about investment,” said Lian Ping, chief economist at the Bank of Communications.
“We have seen households more confident of the future and ready to invest more in either the stock market or fund market.”
The survey found that 75 percent of households have bought shares, up from 67 percent two months ago. It echoed earlier media reports that 5 million people have opened stock trading accounts in April.
The index measuring households’ confidence in the economy climbed 4 points to 119, and the index measuring their rise in income added 3 points to 153.
The index assessing people’s willingness to invest in fixed assets, referring to properties, rose for the first time in six months to 100 from 94 in March. The reading returned to the dividing line indicating positive sentiment.
Lian said people eyed buying homes again after profiting from the stock market.
“There have been signs of a recovering market after the authorities relaxed curbs on the housing market in late March,” Lian said.
People’s hopes of buying homes jumped to 110 in May, up 9 points from March’s figure, the survey showed.
