China and Russia agree trade deals worth US$15b

CHINA and Russia have signed 27 trade contracts worth a total of US$15 billion, Vice Premier Li Keqiang said in Moscow yesterday.

Speaking at a trade and investment meeting in Moscow attended by hundreds of Chinese businessmen, Li said he and one of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's top deputies had witnessed the signing of contracts for "transport, energy, communications, high technology and investment projects."

Li estimated the total value of the contracts signed yesterday at more than US$15 billion.

Among the specific projects named, he said Russia and China were considering the joint design of a wide-bodied long-distance passenger aircraft.

Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov, who also attended the meeting, told participants that Russia was working to improve its investment climate for investors.

During his talks with Prime Minister and President-elect Putin on Friday, Li noted that economic and trade cooperation is an important cornerstone for a Sino-Russian comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination and also gives an impetus to bilateral relations.

He also urged both sides to increase pragmatic cooperation in all spheres to boost mutual development, so as to benefit both countries.

China is Russia's top trade partner. Bilateral trade volume reached US$79.25 billion in 2011, up 42.7 percent year-on-year.
