China asks US for just, objective duty rulings
CHINA urged the United States to rule fairly and objectively in their ongoing trade disputes, and criticized the duties the US imposed on Chinese products as they damaged exports, a senior government official said yesterday.
Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce, blasted the recent US decision to impose countervailing duties of up to 109 percent on Chinese potassium phosphate salts, and duties ranging from 4 percent to 13 percent on Chinese coated paper.
The two decisions, announced by the US Department of Commerce on Tuesday, were the latest in an escalating trade row between the two nations.
"The US again dealt with the issue in a discriminatory way," Yao said in a statement. "China strongly opposes the US practice of abusing its own trade relief measures."
He said it was unreasonable for the US to overturn its ruling made just two years ago. In November 2007, a US government investigation said that the imports of Chinese coated paper did not harm the US market. The US coated paper industry suffered because demand fell in the past two years due to the global financial crisis, Yao said.
He called for better communication between US officials and producers with their Chinese counterparts in dealing with the escalating trade disputes.
"The US is hoping to revive its economy through more exports. But at the same time, the US is curbing exports of other countries. We think the US should stick to its market-oriented principle, and stand in line with other countries to fight against protectionism," Yao said. "Otherwise, it will make the global trade environment worse."
Sino-US trade rows have worsened since September when the US decided to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese tires. The rows quickly spread to other industries.
