China must beef up competitive ability
CHINA should accelerate industrial transformation and boost innovation to be more competitive in order to meet new challenges as developed countries map out a strategy of re-industrialization while emerging nations gear up to threaten its position, senior officials said.
China is still competitive in traditional industries including steel, textile and light industry, and is catching up fast in electronic information, machinery manufacturing, petrochemical, nonferrous metal, automobiles and shipping, participants at the Forum on International Competitiveness of China's Industries said yesterday in Shanghai.
"Chinese industries should be equipped with more advanced technology, produce higher value added products and optimize the industrial structure," said Gu Chungfang, director general of the Investigation Bureau of Industry Injury under the Ministry of Commerce.
She noted it has become increasingly urgent for China to embark on this path when global protectionism is rising, the country is losing its edge in prices, and some developed nations are reviving their manufacturing industries.
Some media reports said General Electric Co had moved the production of energy-saving water heaters, originally contracted to China, back to the United States, and Ford Motor subcontracted some components originally produced overseas to US suppliers.
Zhang Xiangchen, a researcher at the ministry, warned that "emerging countries like India are also pushing forward their industrial development vigorously, posing a big challenge to the position of China."
Zhao Yanyun, a professor at Renmin University of China, said China can expect fiercer competition in relatively new and more profitable industries like new energy, information technology and automobile.
