China to boost efforts to sign free trade agreements

China will strengthen efforts to sign more free trade agreements with other countries and regions, given that such agreements have played a key role in accelerating China's trade, a senior official said today.

China has reached the agreement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, Singapore, Pakistan, New Zealand, Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Iceland and Switzerland. China’s mainland also has closer economic partnerships with Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, said Yao Jian, chief of staff at the Ministry of Commerce.

In addition, another six agreements are being negotiated, including agreements with South Korea, Australia, Norway and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

"Such FTAs have effectively helped China's trade to grow in the past few years, and reduced the costs of trade," Yao said. "They not only benefit business, but also consumers who are able to purchase quality products at a good price."
