China urges US to be 'fair' in trade
CHINA has urged the United States to make objective and fair rulings in trade disputes, and said duties wantonly imposed by the US has curbed normal exports of Chinese goods, a senior government official said today.
Yao Jian, spokesman of the Ministry of Commerce, blasted the recent US decision to impose countervailing duties of up to 109 percent on Chinese potassium phosphate salts, and duties ranging from 4 percent to 13 percent on their imports of Chinese coated paper.
The two cases, announced by the US Department of Commerce on Tuesday, were the latest in a series of trade rows between the US and China.
"The US again dealt with the issue in a discriminatory way," Yao said. "China strongly opposes the US practice of abusing its own trade relief measures."
He said it was unreasonable for the US to overturn its ruling made just two years ago. In November 2007, a US government investigation said that the imports of Chinese coated paper did not create any harm to the US market.
Sino-US trade rows continued to expand since last September when the US decided to impose punitive tariffs on Chinese tires. Conflicts quickly spread to other industries including steel pipes, movies, raw materials, electric blankets and wire decking.
