China's economy slows down, inflation moves up

CHINA'S gross domestic product grew 9.6 percent from a year earlier in the third quarter to 26.8 trillion yuan (US$4 trillion), moderating further from the pace of 10.3 percent in the first six months, the National Bureau of Statistics said today.

Consumer Price Index, the main gauge of inflation, jumped to a two-year high of 3.6 percent in September, up from August's rise of 3.5 percent. The government's target is to keep the yearly CPI under 3.5 percent. The average CPI in the first nine months is 2.9 percent.

Industrial production in the third quarter rose 13.5 percent, down from the increase of 15.9 percent between April and June. But pace of softening has been stabilized from the previous quarters when the output reported a gain of 19.6 percent in the first three months.

Fixed-asset investment in the first three quarters expanded 24 percent to 19.2 trillion yuan, down from the pace of 25 percent in the first half.
