Chinese exporters pushed into a corner, ministry says

SLUGGISH external demand, rising production costs and growing trade disputes are pushing Chinese exporters into a corner, Commerce Ministry Spokesman Shen Danyang said today.

"It is not easy for China to manage a growth in trade when there are so many negative factors," Shen said.

China's trade expanded 7.6 percent from a year earlier in the first quarter, short of China's target of a 10 percent increase in 2012.

Shen said China will keep policies stable, continue the practice of tax refund for exporters, and beef up efforts to solve trade disputes.

In the first three months, foreign countries initiated 16 anti-dumping or countervailing investigations, involving nearly US$3 billion of Chinese products. The value was 2.4 times more than a year earlier.

Shen also noted that China expects to see concrete moves after US President Barack Obama and US Ambassador Gary Locke promised less restriction on US exports of high-tech goods to China.
