Chinese sinks the latest target of US trade probes

THE United States announced the start of anti-dumping and countervailing investigations over China's steel sinks, the Ministry of Commerce in China said today.

It was the fifth case in three days amid recent US moves to stoke trade conflicts, and analysts warned it may add tensions between the world's two biggest traders.

The US Commerce Department said it would launch the investigations over the imports of China's stainless steel sinks, which were widely used in the kitchens of ordinary families. It was on the request of an American firm named Elkay, the ministry said in a statement.

Under the US rules, the US International Trade Commission will announce the preliminary results of the investigation on April 16.

It was among a slew of new cases demonstrating more trade disputes between the world's two largest economies.

This week, the US has unveiled five similar investigations or investigation results over Chinese products including galvanized steel wire, solar cells, steel gas cylinders and fluorescent brightener – marking an unprecedented pace of rolling out unfavorable news that has destabilized bilateral trade relations.

On Thursday, China's Ministry of Commerce also announced to impose five-year anti-dumping duties of up to 28.8 percent on photographic paper and paperboard from the US, the European Union and Japan in a final ruling.
