Chinese women hold their own
MORE Chinese women are on the boards of companies and holding senior management positions, higher than the world’s average, a survey has found.
Women take up 21 percent of the positions on the boards of businesses in China, higher than the global average of 17 percent, Grant Thornton International Business Report 2014 said yesterday.
China ranks ninth in the world for that but the country is top by proportion of senior roles filled by women at 38 percent, above the global average by 14 percentage points.
The survey covers 12,500 companies in 45 countries and regions, with 300 coming from China’s mainland. The firm did not say when the survey was done.
But Chinese companies still need to offer more flexible working conditions and unpaid leave to female staff.
“Women are asked to make as much effort as men in the workplace, yet are required to do more as wife and mother at the same time,” said Xu Hua, the firm’s leading partner.
“Previously, women experienced career bottleneck during child-bearing period, but now more businesses realize the advantages women can bring to the companies after they come back.”
