City expects over 8.2% growth
SHANGHAI'S gross domestic product grew "much better than expected" in 2009 and is forecast to rise over 8.2 percent for the year, Mayor Han Zheng said yesterday.
The city's economy is expected to perform better than the estimate at the beginning of the year although the official figures are still being calculated, Han said when he met a delegation led by Chow Hsi-wei, head of Taipei County, yesterday in Shanghai.
"We can successfully achieve our growth targets this year," Han said. "Shanghai will further make its contribution to China's growth."
Shanghai's fiscal revenue is seen to grow around 7.5 percent to 8 percent this year. Its job market is stable, with new jobs created this year similar to the level of last year. The unemployment rate is expected to be less than 4.5 percent.
Shanghai will continue to develop its service industry and encourage innovation as it aims for a better economic structure in its five-year plan ending in 2015, Han added. The services industry is set to account for half of the city's GDP this year.
Shanghai is also improving its energy efficiency while seeking a stable and healthy growth, he added. Shanghai and Taipei County will hold a forum today to seek a green economic growth.
The city's GDP climbed 9.8 percent annually in the third quarter, from rises of 3.1 percent in the first quarter and 7.9 percent in the second, according to earlier reports.
