Creative spark and culture do mix
SHANGHAI plans to integrate culture and creative activities into a new pillar industry that is seen to rank No. 2 in the city and will drive the local economy, top city officials said yesterday.
The new industry is expected to take the second spot by contribution to the city's gross domestic product after the information and communications technology sector, said Ai Baojun, deputy mayor of Shanghai.
The GDP of the local creative industry, which covers research, architecture design, culture, consulting and fashion, hit 114.8 billion yuan (US$16.8 billion) last year, which accounted for 7.7 percent of the city's total GDP in 2009, a rise of 1.9 percentage points from the previous year, said Wang Jian, director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Development.
The culture industry accounted for 5.8 percent of the city's total GDP but the two industries have some overlapping sectors.
"The industry is environment-friendly with high-added value and it will play an important role for the city to transform the economic structure," Ai said.
The city has established a new office to promote the new culture and creative industry, according to Yin Yicui, Shanghai's deputy Party secretary.
The new industry is related to traditional industries including manufacture, retail and IT and daily life. It will also improve the image of Shanghai which aims to be an international "design city," said Yin.
