Cross-Strait meeting to review early harvest plan
THE Chinese mainland and Taiwan will review and assess the implementation of the early harvest program, which cuts or eliminates tariffs for certain goods traded and eases curbs on service trade between both sides under the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement.
This topic was set to be part of a third regular meeting of the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Committee (ECC) which opened yesterday in New Taipei City in Taiwan.
Expected to be on the meeting's agenda would be updates on the achievements of the ECC's six working groups, discussion of responses to the changing global economic situation, exploration of the international market and related macro-economic policies.
Zheng Lizhong, convener of the ECC on the mainland and executive vice president of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, said the meeting was timely especially when the mainland and Taiwan were "carrying cross-Strait ties forward and forging ahead into the future."
The meeting would be significant for both sides in terms of consolidating their achievements, deepening cooperation and breaking new ground in the development of cross-Strait ties, Zheng said.
According to the early harvest program, which took effect on January 1, 2011, the mainland cuts tariffs on 539 Taiwan goods while the island removes duties on 267 mainland goods in phases over two years. Tariffs for all goods from both sides on the early harvest list are due to drop to zero from January 2013.
The mainland cut the tariffs for over 94 percent of Taiwan goods on the list to zero from January 1 this year, Zheng noted, adding that the zero tariffs will be extended to all listed Taiwan goods next year and benefiting more producers on the island.
