Fair boost for foreign exhibitors
THE East China Fair, the country's largest regional trade fair, will allocate more resources for foreign exhibitors this year to balance its function of being a platform for both exporters and importers.
Dubbed as a barometer for China's trade, the fair will open next Tuesday and run through to Friday at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
To encourage imports, fair organizers have decided to set aside a special zone for foreign exhibitors this year, and more than 170 overseas enterprises have registered to display their products there.
Meanwhile, nearly 3,300 domestic export-oriented companies will participate in this year's fair in an exhibition area covering 103,500 square meters, organizers said yesterday.
"China has been beefing up efforts to balance trade," said Pu Shaohua, director of foreign trade developing department at the Shanghai Commission of Commerce. "The country won't check exports to reduce surplus, but will boost imports and encourage outbound foreign investment."
He also said China's exporters are now under great pressure against a stronger yuan, and they should try all means to upgrade their products for a wider profit margin. The fair offers the best avenue to demonstrate this.
The scale of the fair is almost the same as last year. There will be 5,310 standard booths with four major exhibition areas - garments, home textiles, interior design items and consumer goods.
The annual fair is supported by the Ministry of Commerce and co-sponsored by Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces, and cities of Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo.
