February inflation up 2.7% in Shanghai, above national average

Shanghai’s Consumer Price Index, the main gauge of inflation, expanded 2.7 percent from a year earlier in February, the Shanghai Statistics Bureau said this morning.

The increase slowed from a rise of 3 percent in January, which hit a 20-month high, but was higher than the national average of 2 percent last month.

Food costs, which make up nearly one-third of the CPI basket of prices, rose 3.5 percent year on year in February, compared with 4.6 percent a month earlier.

Inflation climbed 2.8 percent in the January-February period, the bureau said.
