Firms flock to Kangqiao zone

TWENTY companies from home and abroad have signed contracts to invest more than US$956 million to build their regional headquarters and research centers in the Kangqiao Industrial Zone in Shanghai's Pudong New Area.

Their new facilities will take up 0.63 square kilometers.

The zone has 5 square kilometers of its 27 square kilometers of land reserve unexploited, and it plans to encourage more modern service providers to locate their offices there.

"The service sector and advanced manufacturing will continue to be the fastest growing sectors," said Zhang Long, head of the management committee of the Kangqiao Industrial Zone.

Industrial output at the area reached 74.2 billion yuan (US$10.87 billion) last year, of which about 6 percent was generated by the service sector.

It plans to have 100 billion yuan of industrial output by the end of 2012.

Seventeen regional headquarters and five research and development facilities will begin construction in the zone within a year.

Saudi Basic Industries Corp and Caohejing Business Park Construction Co will build both their headquarters and research centers in the zone.

A total of 389 overseas companies and 2,446 domestic ones had their offices or research facilities in the area by the end of last year.
