Greeks see economic rebound next year

GREECE'S economy will likely turn around as early as next year due to its ambitious structural reform as well as coordinated efforts by the world community, Louka Katseli, minister of economy, competitiveness and shipping, said yesterday in Shanghai.

"It is challenging, and this year will be very difficult in particular," Katseli said. "We expect investments and exports to become major drivers of our economy."

Katseli added that China is "extremely important" in the areas of investments and exports for Greece.

Although there is an imbalance in bilateral trade, Greece's exports to China surged 40 percent from a year earlier in the first four months despite its economic woes. Last year, China's exports to Greece totaled 2.9 billion euros (US$3.59 billion) while China imported only 100 million euros from Greece.

Last week Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang visited Greece and signed 14 cooperation agreements to enhance bilateral trade and cooperation in economy, education and culture.
