HK jobless rate unchanged

HONG Kong's seasonally adjusted jobless rate stood at 3.2 percent between May and July, the same as that in April to June, the Census and Statistics Department said yesterday.

According to the latest labor force statistics released by the department, Hong Kong's underemployment rate increased from 1.4 percent in April to June to 1.5 percent in May to July.

Comparing May to July with April to June, increases in the jobless rate (not seasonally adjusted) were mainly observed in the social work activities and real estate sectors, while decreases were more apparent in the accommodation services, repair, laundry, domestic and other personal service activities sectors.

An increase in the underemployment rate was mainly seen in the retail sector.

Total employment rose by around 4,300 from 3,671,400 in April to June to 3,675,700 in May to July. Over the same period, the labor force also increased by around 7,300 from 3,796,900 to 3, 804,200.

The number of jobless persons (not seasonally adjusted) rose by around 3,000 from 125,500 in April to June to 128,500 in May to July.
