Holiday sales soar in Shanghai
SHANGHAI'S retail sales growth for the May Day holiday period was at its highest for the past six years as tourists flocked to the city because of the World Expo.
From April 30 to May 4, about 4,000 stores of 480 large-and-middle sized local retailers netted combined sales of 4.13 billion yuan (US$605 million), up 22.1 percent from the last year's May Day holiday.
The growth was the highest since 2005 and also 7.9 percentage points higher than the same period of last year.
The 826 million yuan average in daily sales was also almost 5 times that of 2000, when China adopted the long May Day holiday for the first time.
The shopping spree included various promotion activities that featured the World Expo.
The New World Department Store on Nanjing Road West offered half-price entry for Expo-ticket holders visiting Madame Tussauds Shanghai and saw daily traffic of more than 100,000 people. Its retail sales increased by 14 percent to 62 million yuan for the five-day holiday.
Expo souvenirs at the New World Department Store exceeded 1 million yuan.
Expo souvenirs worth 20 million yuan were sold at the Expo site from May 1 to 3.
Gold and jewelry remained the most popular products over the holiday shopping season and saw a 53.5 percent increase in sales.
Other popular items include clothing, luxury watches and food.
The Nextage Department Store in Pudong came top of all the shopping centers with sales of 107 million yuan, followed by Shanghai Outlets in suburban Qingpu District and the Oriental Shopping Center in Xujiahui commercial area.
