Hongqiao set to be a cluster of activities
SHANGHAI Hongqiao commercial area plans to develop itself into a headquarters economy that brings together trade and exhibition clusters as it taps its role as a comprehensive transport hub.
The organizing committee of Hongqiao area in west Shanghai said it will encourage the growth of clusters in 12 categories, including innovation, logistics, convention and tourism as well as financial services.
"The headquarters economy will be the core of the commercial area," said Xue Quanrong, deputy director of the committee. "The development will feature advanced logistics and high-end trade and commerce whose aim is to boost the whole Yangtze Delta region."
Last year, Shanghai unveiled the greater Hongqiao plan to boost the city's position as an international trade center with extensive transport links. Hongqiao International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station were designed to handle 1.1 million to 1.4 million passengers daily.
"We will take advantage of the convenience of the transport hub to turn the Hongqiao area into a high-level commercial area," Xue said.
The whole development will cover 26.3 square kilometers. The first phase of 1.4 square kilometers will allocate 57 percent for businesses and offices, 17 percent for hotels and 10 percent for convention and exhibition space. The first phase is expected to generate annual output of 15 billion yuan (US$2.26 billion) once it is completed.
Hong Kong's Shui On Land Ltd and a group led by Shanghai Hongqiao Commercial Area Investment Co won the first two plots of land in an auction. They will build complexes housing offices, convention halls, hotels and malls.
