Hope for record East China Fair

OFFICIALS expect more buyers this year at next week's East China Fair, as the world's economy recovers.

The East China Fair, the country's largest regional trade fair, celebrates its 20th year when it opens next Monday at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

Jiang Xuegeng, one of the fair's organizers, said exhibitors have a high expectation this year. "This is a special year when the global economy seems to be retreating from the financial crisis. Also, the event is held right before the World Expo, which offers many new opportunities," Jiang said.

This year's fair includes catwalk models for fashion designs and the latest toys. The five-day fair is supported by the Ministry of Commerce and is co-sponsored by three cities, Shanghai, Nanjing and Ningbo, and six provinces of Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Shandong.

Since 1991, the annual fair has attracted a total of nearly 50.000 buyers from 145 countries, with exports valued at US$2.24 billion.

More than 165 overseas enterprises from Japan, South Korea, India, the United States, Hong Kong and Taiwan have registered to exhibit their products at the fair.
