Innovate to cement hub status

CHINA remains an attractive place for global sourcing despite rising labor and operational costs, experts said at a forum in Shanghai yesterday, citing the country's ability to provide one-stop sourcing solutions.

But China needs to encourage innovation to help it cement its position as a global sourcing hub, they said at the 2011 Pudong International Sourcing Forum.

"China is still very competitive," said Diane Long, managing director of Xanadu Enterprise Ltd and vice president of UBS International. "It is because the country can provide comprehensive and stable supply chain services."

Feng Zhe, director of sourcing at BP China, said the country's good infrastructure is a huge advantage for it to remain a major center for sourcing, while other experts said rising labor costs are still less costly unlike those in developed countries.

Sha Hailin, chairman of the Shanghai Commission of Commerce, said at the forum the city will build international sourcing as a core pillar to transform the city into a global trading hub.
