Ireland鈥檚 ambassador encourages Chinese investment in Shanghai visit
IRELAND expects to attract more Chinese investment as the two countries strengthen their bilateral relationship, Ambassador of Ireland Paul Kavanagh said in Shanghai yesterday.
It was Kavanagh's first trip to Shanghai after he took post three months ago.
"Ireland is a good choice for investment because the country is friendly, green and modern," Kavanagh told Shanghai Daily in an exclusive interview. "It can be a gateway for the European Union market and it has the youngest labor force in the region."
Ireland attracted the largest amount of foreign investment in a decade last year, Kavanagh added.
To make it more convenient for visitors, Kavanagh said Ireland is now in talks with the United Kingdom on a common visa program, which may allow people to visit the UK with an Irish visa.
Closer business ties are expected as a group of food experts from Ireland will arrive in China very soon to discuss the possibility of exporting Irish beef to China.
Besides the food sector, Ireland is also strong in financial services, energy, pharmaceuticals and life-science sectors that may provide Chinese investors with good investment opportunities, Kavanagh said.
During the past year, Ireland and China have stepped up their relationship on political, business and social levels, with more bilateral exchanges and cooperative agreements, Kavanagh said.
