Mainland firms lower recruiting expectations

COMPANIES on the Chinese mainland have lowered their hiring expectations due to an uncertain economy but their intention to recruit is still higher than in other Asian markets, according to a survey released in Shanghai yesterday.

The lower hiring intention suggested that more mainland companies have adopted a "wait-and-see" approach to recruitment and would keep their current headcount level steady until the picture in the domestic and global economies become clearer, the survey by Hudson Recruitment revealed.

The survey revealed that during the first quarter of this year, 60 percent of the mainland companies expected to expand their labor force over the next three months, down from 66 percent in the previous quarter, and a drop from 77 percent in the same quarter last year, Hudson said.

But the 60 percent level still led other Asian markets because it was nearly double the level for Singapore and Hong Kong, said Hudson, which also conducted the survey in other Asian markets at the same time.

Hudson conducted the quarterly survey of about 650 managers across key sectors on the Chinese mainland.
