Matter of inflated data arises again

The issue of inflated economic output figures arose again as the combined gross domestic product of provincial areas surpassed the national economy.

On Monday, the National Bureau of Statistics pledged to combat malpractices in data collection.

The figures submitted by the 28 provinces and municipalities, which have released their economic data, showed their total GDP amounted to 58.94 trillion yuan (US$9.74 trillion) in 2013, beating the nation’s 56.88 trillion yuan economy, according to the statistics bureau.

Liu Yuanchun, an economics professor at Renmin University of China, said the biggest reason was that local governments inflated or even fabricated the figures to make them look better.

“Some local governments raised the figures to meet targets, and some officials made them to benefit their career,” Liu said.

He also said repetitive calculation, which was caused by overlapping economic activities, could not be overlooked too.
