Ministry Defends Spending On Overseas Trips

INCREASED spending on officials' overseas trips was unavoidable given China's growing economic and business clout, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.

It spent 61.7 million yuan (US$9.53 million) on overseas trips in 2010 and allocated 8.37 million yuan for receptions.

"The heavy weight of spending on overseas trips is out of necessity to conduct more than 50 bilateral dialogues, such as the free trade agreement negotiations," said ministry spokesman Yao Jian. "It is to meet the need of China's economic development, and the requirement of reform and opening-up."

He said, for example, that the French trade minister would have visited only once in several years in the past. "But with China's growing clout, the French trade minister now comes to Beijing three to four times a year."

The ministry plans to allocate 53.1 million yuan for overseas trips this year.
