Nothing chicken about tariffs
CHINA announced yesterday that it will impose a countervailing duty of up to 31.4 percent on imports of American chicken products, the latest in an escalating trade dispute between the two countries.
A preliminary ruling posted on the Ministry of Commerce's Website said the United States government provided subsidies for their chicken producers and the subsidized chicken imports caused substantial damage to the Chinese industry.
The ruling said China will slap a tariff of 31.4 percent on American exports of chicken products to China, and for companies which cooperate in the probe, the duty will be between 3.8 percent and 11.2 percent.
China's Customs will collect a deposit based on the ruling from tomorrow.
No immediate figures were available on the volume of Chinese imports of American chicken products.
"We have seen a lot of disputes emerging in the past few months, and we will continue to see such cases because all countries want to exploit export opportunities and reduce imports to consolidate their own economic recovery," said Sun Lijian, an economics professor at Fudan University.
"However, trade protectionism is harmful to the global economic recovery. A more reasonable practice is to focus on how to promote exports, instead of curbing imports," Sun added.
China has seen several trade disputes with other countries this month. The US said last Wednesday that it initiated an anti-dumping and anti-subsidy probe on Chinese aluminum extrusions, after the European Union decided to begin a countervailing probe into China's exports of coated paper on April 17.
China also last week announced it would slap anti-dumping duties on imports of nylon 6 from the US, the EU, Russia and Taiwan markets.
China had 19 trade remedy investigations worth US$1.19 billion against it in the first quarter, up 93 percent over the same period of last year, the ministry said.
