Pledge to improve quality of exports
WITH six trade commissions pledging self-improving actions, China's Ministry of Commerce yesterday promised better support for qualified exports and more severe punishment for shoddy products in line with the ministry's campaign to make 2011 "the year of quality improvement in exports."
Vice Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng said China's overall quality of exports is good, but there may exist a trust crisis after the country reported quality problems in a few industries, the food sector in particular.
"Quality is closely linked to competitiveness of our products," Gao told commerce officials from around the country. "It also decides the profitability of our products, and is related to the image of our country."
There have been fewer reports about quality problems in China's exports after 2008, but more cases have come to light in the domestic market, some even life-threatening instances, Gao said.
The ministry has determined to disqualify a company from exporting its products if they are found to have quality problems, and it will even be banned from participating in trade fairs, Gao said.
On Tuesday, six trade commissions comprising more than 40,000 export-oriented companies in the light industry, textile, mining, food, electrical equipment and medical machines pledged to upgrade the quality of products exported by their member companies.
