Provinces' GDP beats national GDP

CHINA'S 31 provinces and regions reported for the second straight year that their total gross domestic product of 51.8 trillion yuan (US$8.22 trillion) was bigger than the national GDP last year.
The provinces and regions' GDP was 4.6 trillion yuan bigger than the national figure, China Economic Net said in a report yesterday.
In 2010, the difference between the two GDPs was 3.2 trillion yuan and in 2009 the gap was 2.68 trillion yuan.
Wang Xiaru, an analyst at Changjiang Securities, said the provincial GDP figure may not be accurate. "The provinces often glossed over their GDP figures and made mistakes during data collection," Wang said.
To better assess a province's economic growth, Wang suggested that other economic data such as industrial production and ports' handling capacity should also be studied.
By value, Guangdong Province's GDP was the highest at a record 5.3 trillion yuan last year. Jiangsu Province was second with a GDP of 4.9 trillion yuan and Shandong Province's GDP was third at 4.5 trillion yuan.
Chongqing and Tianjin municipalities grew the fastest by 16.4 percent each last year.
China's GDP rose 9.2 percent.
