Rural purchases
CONSUPTION of electrical appliances in China's rural areas has more than doubled in March from a year earlier, the Ministry of Commerce said yesterday.
In March, 14.7 million units of electrical appliance were sold under a subsidy program, up 135 percent from a year earlier. Sales hit 34.5 billion yuan (US$3.2 billion), 179 percent higher than a year ago, according to a statement on the ministry's website.
China in 2007 started a subsidy program to boost consumption in the rural areas. Rural residents could get a subsidy of as much as 13 percent of the product price if they purchase certain brands of electrical appliances, including TV sets, fridges, and computers.
A total of 150 million units have been sold under the program, the ministry said.
