Seeking surplus not deliberate decision

CHINA does not seek a trade surplus deliberately and will continue to seek a balanced trade, Vice Commerce Minister Yi Xiaozhun said yesterday in Shanghai.

"China seeks a balanced trade," Yi said at the opening forum for the 2010 International Sourcing Fair. "We no longer put the emphasis on scale and growth speed, but more on quality and profitability of our trade."

Yi said the fair provided a good platform for traders to exchange information on new technology, which would help to accelerate the pace of China's industrial restructuring.

The fair, which starts today and runs through Saturday at ShanghaiMart, attracted 306 exhibitors from 32 countries and regions.

Organizers forecast the sourcing value at the fair to top US$26 billion, up 45 percent from a year earlier due to a recovery in demand from the global financial crisis.

The first Shanghai International Sourcing Confidence Index was also unveiled at yesterday's forum.

The index, which measures confidence of companies in sourcing for the next quarter, stood at 64.54 points, way above 50, which is generally viewed as expansion.
