Service integration vital to delta
THE Yangtze River Delta region should continue to explore ways to integrate the service industry after the World Expo and make it an engine to power its economy, officials and experts said yesterday at a forum in Shanghai.
"The World Expo has demonstrated how cities in the Yangtze River Delta region can join and cooperate in developing a service industry," Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said at the forum, which was organized by the development and reform commissions in Shanghai as well as Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
The industry, which includes financial services, logistics and outsourcing, is high technology and is viewed as value-added and greener.
It's important to further develop the service industry as the region is relatively scarce of natural resources, said Hua Jianmin, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature.
"The region has great potential to be developed as a growth model for the domestic services industry," Hua said. "It is also urgent to cooperate because the service industry offers a path for the region to revamp its economic structure."
Fan Hengshan, director of the regional economy department at the National Development and Reform Commission, China's top economic planner, said a demonstration park may be established in the region.
