Shanghai's FDI to rise 13% this year

FOREIGN direct investment in Shanghai is expected to grow 13 percent from a year earlier to reach US$15 billion in 2010, compared with a rise of 4.5 percent last year, the Shanghai Commission of Commerce said today.

The number of foreign-invested projects may reach 3,800 this year, expanding 28 percent annually with more of them being in the modern services sector, the local commerce commission said.

Sha Hailin, director of the commission, said today that Shanghai has managed to attract foreign investments of the best quality and in the biggest scale during the city's 11th Five-Year Plan period, which ranged from 2005 to 2010.

Sha made the remarks at a ceremony to give certificates to 20 foreign companies which have recently located their regional headquarters in Shanghai.

By the end of November, a total of 301 foreign multinational companies have set up their regional headquarters in the city, while 317 foreign-invested research and development centers were also established.

In the first 10 months, foreign investors have channeled US$12.6 billion of capital into the city, a rise of 15.9 percent year-on-year.
