Telecoms executive in bribes probe
A SENIOR executive with China Mobile has been taken into custody in connection with an investigation into bribery allegations involving European engineering conglomerate Siemens AG.
Shi Wanzhong, 50, was human resources head of the world's largest mobile phone operator when "he was taken away by relevant authorities to assist in the investigation," China Mobile told China Business News on Tuesday.
Shi helped Siemens "a lot" over its telecommunication business during his time as chairman of China Mobile's branch in Anhui Province, according to the newspaper.
At about the same time, Siemens paid US$5 million to a consulting firm owned by Shi's wife for its "service," the report said.
Allegations that Siemens offered bribes overseas involving more than US$100 million were made in 2006.
According to the United States Department of Justice, the Berlin-based global powerhouse paid bribes in China involving electricity, transport and medicine sectors, but there was no mention of telecommunications.
However, China received information from lawsuits regarding the Siemens allegations that Shi was suspected of accepting bribes. Meanwhile, there were tip-offs from China Mobile insiders suggesting Shi accepted 50 million yuan (US$7.3 million) during his tenure in Anui.
On Tuesday, a Munich court found two former Siemens executives guilty of breach of trust and abetting bribes in Russia, Libya and Nigeria.
