Thailand counts on Chinese
THAILAND expects a near doubling of travelers from China by 2020 as business links strengthen and a planned high-speed railway comes on line in about five years, a Thai government official said yesterday.
The railway, part of a line running from China's Kunming City to Singapore, is expected to start operating in 2017 or 2018, said Puripan Bunnag, a senior manager at the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau.
He added: "Chinese firms are showing great interest in investing in pharmaceutical firms and rubber plantations. The government is also opening up investment to foreign companies."
Akapol Sorasuchart, president of the bureau, said the number of Chinese business visitors to Thailand has grown an average 15 to 20 percent in recent years, due to steady expansion of the Chinese economy and increased flexibility of travel regulations.
