Top 10 foreign invested firms have spent US$7.8b in city

THE top 10 foreign invested companies have spent a combined US$7.8 billion on 234 projects, representing 19.2 percent of all investment projects by Fortune 500 companies in the city.

European and American companies held nine spots among the top 10 largest foreign-invested companies in the city, a local newspaper reported today.

The top 10 include Bayer, BASF, General Motors, Unilever, Emerson, Hutchison Whampoa, Alcatel-Lucent, BP, Intel and General Electric, Oriental Morning Post reported.

The Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce compiled the list according to the size of investment.

General Motors, which ranked No. 3, had earned 5.24 billion yuan (US$765 million) in profit by the end of 2007.

There are about 33,000 foreign invested companies in Shanghai, the report said.
