Traders' confidence increases

TRADERS on the Chinese mainland said their confidence increased, bolstered by positive prospects surrounding the global economy and the country's major trading partners, according to a HSBC survey yesterday.

The mainland is among five economies, which also include Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United States and Mexico, that showed a rebound in confidence in the HSBC survey.

The confidence shown by mainland importers and exporters rose to 114 from 111 in a previous survey half a year ago. A measurement above 100 indicates positive attitude.

HSBC conducted the survey in the first quarter, which collected the six-month views of 6,390 exporters, importers and traders in 21 economies. The survey has been done every six months since 2009.

More mainland companies are expecting better business from North America, Germany and Britain, while they are pessimistic about trade with Latin America, Southeast Asia and Middle East.

Globally, respondents said the two major challenges they face are soaring raw material costs and interest rates amid rising inflation.
