UK wants Chinese investors

The United Kingdom rolls out the welcome mat for Chinese investments, in particular in the creative industry, Brian Shaw, managing director of business at the UK Trade and Investment, said in Shanghai yesterday.

He said investing in the UK is a good choice because the country provides a good platform for an investor to access European markets, and even global markets. The UK has "the right environment" with its strong regulation and intellectual property right protection, he added.

"The UK is good at nurturing companies which have great growth potential and aim to become global," Shaw said at the UK Pavilion in the World Expo site yesterday in an exclusive interview. "We welcome investors in the innovation industry in particular. We have demonstrated our strong call for creativity with this unique pavilion."

The UK Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai has an imaginative design of a cube-like structure pierced by 60,000 slim transparent acrylic rods.

While it may be good timing for Chinese investors to go to the UK because the pound has fallen, Shaw also said that companies should look for long-term growth and make good use of the UK's global network.

"Once you invest in the UK, your company is considered a UK company, and can benefit from our strong global network," Shaw said.
