US looking at Chinese steel sinks
THE United States has announced plans for an anti-dumping and countervailing probe over China's steel sinks, China's Ministry of Commerce said yesterday, cautioning domestic manufacturers.
It was a fifth such case in three days where the US has made moves that stoke trade conflicts, and analysts warned it may add to tensions between the world's two largest traders.
The US Commerce Department said it would launch an investigation over the imports of drawn stainless steel sinks from China on the request of an American firm named Elkay, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
Drawn stainless steel sinks are widely used in household kitchens. Last year, Chinese manufacturers exported about US$118 million worth of such products to the United States.
Under American rules, the US International Trade Commission will announce preliminary results of the investigation on April 16.
It was among a slew of new cases that have brought to the fore trade disputes between the world's two biggest economies.
Apart from the present probe, the US this week unveiled four investigations or investigation results over Chinese products, namely galvanized steel wire, solar panel, steel gas cylinder and fluorescent brightener, marking an unprecedented pace of rolling out unfavorable news that can destabilize bilateral trade relations.
"Trade rows are not new to both countries as the first rift started three years ago along with the global economic crisis," said Xue Jun, an analyst at CITIC Securities Co. "But the current intensity is rare. It is possibly a side-effect of the ongoing campaign for the US presidential election."
