WTO ruling on exports appealed

CHINA has appealed a WTO ruling against its export policy on raw materials such as bauxite and coke, and demanded that the trade body overturn part of the ruling.

A World Trade Organization legal panel in July ruled that China has broken global trading rules when it limited the exports of several industrial raw materials by imposing duties and quotas on them, giving the country's manufacturers an unfair edge.

China appealed the case on Wednesday, the Ministry of Commerce said in a statement yesterday, before today's deadline.

A ministry spokesman last week confirmed that China would appeal.

China has countered that its practices and policies don't violate WTO rules as they are meant to protect the environment and conserve natural resources.

The WTO's appellate body will make a decision within three months of an appeal being lodged.
