Xiamen readies FTZ application to facilitate Taiwan trade
XIAMEN city has officially started preparing to apply for a free trade zone to facilitate trading with Taiwan, reports said.
The city's government has been organizing a designated group to coordinate the existing special Customs supervision zones and construct a free trade zone, a government official told 21st Century yesterday.
Xiamen will take advantage of its proximity to Taiwan to forge closer cross-straight trade, officials said.
The zone under planning covers 9.52 square kilometers with 32-ton berths.
A landmark policy document the Communist Party of China released Friday after Third Plenary Session of the 18th CPC Central Committee shows the importance of the Shanghai pilot FTZ.
"On the basis of pushing forward development of the existing pilot FTZ, qualified regions will be selected to build free trade zones or ports," the document said.
Tianjin and Qingdao cities and Guangdong Province are also applying for free trade zones of their own after the first one was opened late September in Shanghai.
