Zijin helps victims with donation

A CHINESE mining company yesterday said it will donate 50 million yuan (US$$7.5 million) to people affected by a tailing pond collapse that caused a dam to burst and killed 22.

Zijin Mining Group said in a filing to the Hong Kong stock exchange that the tailing pond was improperly built and operated and was overwhelmed by heavy rains from a typhoon. After it overflowed, a nearby hydroelectric dam burst - an accident investigators said was also the result of its being built improperly.

"We express deep sorrow and regret regarding the casualties and loss of property resulting from the flooding and collapse" of the tailing pond dam at the Yinyan Tin Mine in south China's Guangdong Province, the statement said.

The company's board of directors voted on Monday to donate the money to the bureau of civil affairs in nearby Xinyi to assist victims. It did not say whether the money would go to the families of those killed.

Five of the people killed on September 21 died downstream from the tailing pond and the other 17 were downstream from the power plant.

Investigators found that the collapse of the tailing pond was the "direct cause of the flooding and collapse of the dam," Zijin's filling said.

Zijin is China's biggest gold miner and a top producer of copper and zinc.
