Automation and energy efficiency take center stage at industry fair

CHINA'S major industrial fair opened yesterday, highlighting energy-efficient and automation products as exhibitors seek to cash in on the nation's industrial upgrade.

"China is at an important phase of its economic restructuring and energy efficiency is a key strategy for achieving industrial upgrade," said Gu Chunyuan, head of automation business for ABB North Asia and China, at the China International Industry Fair in Shanghai.

ABB and other automation companies have been supplying devices and services, such as robots, for Chinese manufacturers to reduce labor costs and allow machines to do work with less energy, faster times and fewer mistakes.

China has become the world's fastest growing robotics market. Installation of multi-role robots in the nation has risen by 136 percent from 2008 to 2011 and will grow another 15 percent this year, according to the International Federation of Robotics.

But China is still far behind other markets in robotic density. At less than half the global average, there is great growth potential, Gu said.

Some Chinese companies also took the stage to showcase their latest achievements, including wheel hubs produced from China's first magnesium alloy wheel hub line. It was developed by a company under Yanshan University, in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province. China is the third country to produce such super lightweight wheel hubs after the US and Germany. It has already received orders from high-end automakers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW, exhibitors said.

This year, companies from home and abroad rented 6,565 booths, the highest since the annual event was launched in 1999, despite a downturn in the global economy.

"We know the overall economy is not doing well, so we came trying to explore an opportunity to get new orders," said Xu Yaguo, deputy general manager of Zhejiang Wanma Group, which is mainly engaged in the manufacturing of power cables.

Xu said he planned to visit at least 100 potential clients during this year's fair.

The show runs through Saturday at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.
