BASF plant in Chongqing gets green light

CHINA has approved a controversial chemical project by German chemical giant BASF to build a 8-billion-yuan (US$1.2 billion) MDI plant in Chongqing, southwest China.

The project, contested by environmentalists and local residents, was approved following stringent examination of its environmental, health and safety standards, two rounds of public hearings and several expert debates, BASF said in a statement today.

The new plant is expected to start production by 2014.

MDI, or diphenylmethane diisocyanate, is a core component for versatile polyurethane products. Polyurethane is used extensively for cold and heat insulation applications and is the preferred material for storing food and medication.

BASF has been producing MDI in Shanghai since 2006. Bayer, another German chemical company, said last December that it will build a 500,000-ton-a-year MDI plant and expand an existing MDI facility from 350,000 tons to 500,000 tons at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park.
