Bohai Bay spill cleared

AN oil field operated by ConocoPhillips off China's northeast coast had an oil leak last month, but the slick has been largely cleaned up.

The leak at the Penglai 19-3 field in Bohai Bay is now under control and the spill has been recovered, CNOOC Ltd said yesterday, citing reports it received from ConocoPhillips China.

The Penglai 19-3 project, China's largest offshore oil field in operation, is 51 percent owned by CNOOC and 49 percent by ConocoPhillips.

The Penglai incident first came to light on June 21 when the issue was posted online. The sources were unknown.

Related information were deleted later and until yesterday there were no comments from the companies involved.

The CNOOC statement didn't specify the scale of the spill and its impact on the environment. It said authorities were investigating the cause of the incident.

On Thursday, the Southern Weekend newspaper reported that the spill occurred around June 10 about 70 kilometers off the coast of Shandong Province. The slick measured 3 kilometers by 20-30 meters, it said.
