CNOOC's plan to offer gains for sectors

CHINA National Offshore Oil Corp plans to yield an annual production capacity of 50 million tons on the continental shelf areas off China by 2015 as part of its efforts to boost oil and gas production and this will trigger a huge demand for ocean engineering equipment.

Jin Xiaojian, general manager of CNOOC's engineering and construction department, yesterday said the plan requires a total investment of 250 billion to 300 billion yuan (US$37 million to US$44 million) of new oil platforms, pipelines and specialized vessels which will benefit a range of industries from shipbuilding to mechanic and steel.

The plan is part of CNOOC's ambition to boost oil and gas output to 100 million to 120 million tons of oil equivalent by 2015, he said. Production stood at 47.66 million tons of oil equivalent last year.

"A new wave of equipment making and development is to come in the next five years to support China's offshore energy sector," Jin said at a forum on the sidelines of the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Technology and Equipment Exhibition, known as CIPPE, Asia's leading petroleum equipment trade fair.

CNOOC will invest 30 billion yuan to build a second batch of deepwater engineering equipment like positioning vessels and pipe-laying ships, which will be delivered around 2015, he said.

Zhao Zhiming, vice chairman of the China Petroleum and Petrochemical Equipment Industry Association, disclosed that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has drafted a five-year development plan for the ocean engineering equipment sector in China.
