Celanese eye plants

CELANESE Corp plans to build one or two coal-to-ethanol plants in China to meet growing demand.

The two plants, each with an annual capacity of 400,000 tons, will supply ethanol for industrial chemical production. Operations will start within 30 months after China grants approval, the United States specialty material firm said yesterday, without revealing possible locations. Each plant may cost up to US$350 million to build, a spokeswoman said.

China's chemical industry consumes about 3 million tons of ethanol a year and demand is growing 8 to 10 percent annually, Celanese said.
