China is big player in global energy
CHINA has become one of the main countries driving the upgrading of global energy production and consumption, a report by British Petroleum said yesterday.
Spencer Dale, chief economist of BP, said China is a major player in the world’s energy market. Although China’s energy consumption grew by 1.5 percent last year, the lowest for the past two decades, it was still the biggest contributor to global energy usage with more clean and renewable resources.
China led the world’s output in clean energy last year as the net growth rate of 1.3 percent in global nuclear power production was due to China’s domestic growth of 28.9 percent, the report said. The 5 percent growth in China’s hydroelectricity output means that the country remains as the world’s largest hydroelectricity producer.
The report said China has overtaken South Korea to become the world’s fourth-largest producer of nuclear energy based on 2015 data.
China saw a growth rate of 20.9 percent in the output of renewable energy such as solar and wind, and the report said China was responsible for most of the increase in renewable power generation in the world. Last year, 6.7 percent of global power was generated by renewable energy, up from 2 percent 10 years ago. About 213 terawatt-hours were generated by solar, wind and biomass fuel last year, equal to a growth rate of 15.2 percent year on year.
In 2015, China was among the largest emerging markets for natural gas as domestic use grew 4.7 percent annually.
